My research interests include defense policy, nuclear strategy, and modern warfare. I am particularly interested in how great powers handle asymmetric threats, including weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, insurgency, gray-war, and cyber attacks. The "strategic deficit" of democratic states makes domestic politics a key limiting feature for United States policy-makers dealing with unconventional threats. Accordingly, my theoretical interest falls within the classical realist tradition and the neoclassical realist revival thereof. Geographically, my interest covers both Middle East, with a primary focus on Iran, as well as the Asian-Pacific theater.
